Gail Spivey’s Tribute to Tillie Fowler Excellence in Public Service Series

Even when Tillie Fowler was in local politics in Jacksonville, she was a hero to me. She was a lady with style. She had true integrity with grit. I just totally admired her. And I wondered how she accomplished all that she did.

More and more, as years go by and as our country slides further and further away from its true identity, I desire to be like Tillie Fowler. I want to serve with integrity. I want to make a difference.

I was introduced to Republican Women of Florida two years ago and enthusiastically joined to help re-elect President Bush and to elect Senator Martinez. I kept hearing—and asking—about this “Republican Women’s training” that was spoken of as the best in the country. I wanted it. Who knew the two entities would be blended to provide exactly what I was looking for?

The Tillie Fowler Excellence in Public Service Series has provided me with political knowledge that will serve me well wherever I choose to apply my skills. I have been taught by experienced, successful women (and men). I have been nurtured and encouraged by women whom I now cherish as my friends. I have been introduced to the political arena and provided with a network of dedicated people to assist me with information and assistance to meet any goal I choose as a Public Servant. I have been instructed in effectively helping other women to meet their goals as well. I have been escorted to the very halls of government at the local, state, and national levels. I have seen the empty space in the United States Capitol awaiting the first woman PRESIDENT! I have been given enough training, skill, and practice in order to prepare, fund raise, and run an effective campaign—for myself or for someone else. I have new friends all over the country whom I met through this Series. I have names I can call if I have a question or need help. How valuable is that?

That is the gift I received from Republican Women of Florida. It is a priceless gift for which I will forever be grateful. It is my extreme privilege and honor to be a member of the Inaugural Class of 2005. It is my duty to see that their confidence in me and my ability is not wasted.
